Cloncurry to Richmond, 18th May, 2024

Tonight is our third night  in Queensland. Still hitting 30 degrees and still very warm at night. Since we left Three Ways intersection, back on the Stuart Highway the roads have been terrible. The first part going out to the Barkly Homestead was due to the recent floods the area had recently had,  breaking up the surface. Then after that stretch the road became very uneven throwing us around in the cab. Tiring for PT driving as well, and me just sitting there. This continued  after Mt Isa but also got hilly and winding around the hills. After Cloncurry we thought  it might get better but no it went all the way to where we are now, Richmond. Also they are doing roadworks along this stretch and had workers stop, start traffic lights. Lost count how many. They even change red on us when nothing was coming the other way. I think our trip today which was meant to be about a three hour trip took four and half hours. I’m guessing it will go on after we leave here in two days. Probably the Road Trains  don’t help between Townsville and Mt Isa. However we will only be going as far as Charters Towers for 2 days and then we will be heading south from there. After three big driving days we now have two nights at Richmond.

This is where we are at Richmond.

A bit of excitement on our road trip today. We could see smoke in the distance. The guy in the picture is one of the firemen with a hose from the truck.

Getting closer

Then a fire engine stopped on the wrong side of the road. And behind the truck there were three firemen fighting the fire.

Then went by this burning truck. Think the owner is the guy in the green shirt. Maybe something exploded on his back tray. We will never know. This shows how this dry grass can just ignite.  As we passed we could hear the crackling of it burning.

Continuing on nearly at Richmond.

Approaching Richmond. We see a lot of bougainvilleas growing in these parts.

This guy greeted us when we arrived in town.

At last we have arrived in the Lakeside Caravan Park in Richmond for two nights. Nothing to do tomorrow except walk around the lake which you can see from our camper.

Lake in the background. We are up higher than the lake and the wind has been blowing quite hard up here.

We look out on this gazebo from our site as in above photo

Standing inside looking over the lake. This shows that we are up higher.

Clearer shot of the lake.

Walking down to the water.

A pretty spot. We will walk around the lake tomorrow. The path goes right around.

Walking around the camping grounds saw this  magnificent bougainvillea

Great day to catch up the washing took very little time to dry. It nearly took off in the sudden gusts. Our van behind the tree.

Not a lot happening today except that awful road to deal with but nice to be in this spot for two nights. After a walk tomorrow morning, will just relax in the afternoon.  😎
