HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROBIN have a great day.
Left this morning at 7.15am big driving day arriving at Coober Pedy at 11.45am. We had one quick stop made a coffee then on our way again. Little cool when we got up but by the time we got to Coober Pedy very hot. Going to take a few days to adjust to that heat. It will get hotter as we go north. After lunch went for a walk into town and so hot, very exhausting so didn’t go far. The wind did pick up a bit later in the afternoon which is nice to cool things down. It will probably be cold tonight. This is what it does hot in the day cold at night. Pictures today all on our road trip this morning. Just relaxed for the rest of the day after our walk into town.

7.30 this morning. See by the Shadow of the van, shows how early it is sun still coming up. People say how boring these long straight flat roads are but we love being out in the outback. As you will see in today’s photos how the colours change all the time so don’t find it boring just love. Quiet, not a lot of traffic and straight driving. How good is that.
We have been driving on all the flat land, then it suddenly drops away on one side of the road.
This was unusual we went down a hill after all that continuous flat driving.
Stopped and had a look at Lake Hart. It’s huge this is only about a quarter to what we saw sitting in the middle of the outback. It is a salt lake which they can turn pink during certain times of the year. They are scattered around oz in many areas. We have seen one on the West Coast that was very pink which looked amazing but no pink today.
This shot just appeared a little area on its own in an area that was like below. 🤔
A very long train probably each carriage would be carrying iron ore, or similar.
Roads change all the time from black to red. This one is more black/red. You can see as far as the eye will let you. This is real outback. Just great.
Stopped for our coffee in a parking bay then off again.
We actually went over a bridge over these railway lines which are used by the miners. As we started to approach Coober Pedy we could see mounds of dirt where they had dug out their mines.
More changes of colours.
Interesting looking track going to who knows where.
Moving along lots of different colours. How could this be boring.
We now have a really red road. You just wouldn’t believe how good these roads are so flat and very smooth seal. A dream to drive on.
Now we have arrived at Coober Pedy. This is a famous Opal mining town so I will have to see what I can find. It will be a nice break for PT not having to drive tomorrow as we have two nights here. We have booked two tours tomorrow which are run by the owner of the camp who has his own bus. First one starts at 8.30am for three hours going round the town, will be taken out to a working opal mine. Coober Pedy is also well known for its underground buildings which you will see in tomorrow’s blog. The second tour is also for three hours leaving at 4.00pm and we will be driving half hour out to the west on some unsealed roads to see the Breakaways and watch the sunset go down drinking coffee and eating cake. It’s meant to be pretty spectacular so watch this space tomorrow.
This is another road sign for Coober Pedy. Unfortunately there was a car and caravan stopped right in front of it,
Went for a walk after lunch and climbed this hill looking down over the town. The buildings along the road are shops. PT will be looking forward to be driven around tomorrow by George the owner of the camp.
