ULURU / AYERS ROCK

Many people think thatAyers Rock is oblong how it looks in all the distance photos. Brown area is the Rock. You can see our two walks Mala walk and kuniya walk. Orange is the walking track right around the Rock grey/yellow is the road which we drove around.

KATA TJUTA, aka THE OLGAS

A group of large sandstone dome rock formations ( brown areas on above) not like Uluṟu being one big individual sandstone rock. Height 1066m  a lot higher than Uluṟu at 348m high. The two walks we did today were,
VALLEY OF THE WINDS and WALPA GORGRE
————-

All this creamy tussock grasses I love, are called Spinifec which is one of the worlds hardest grasses. That’s why they survive so well in these hot desert conditions. They all look so healthy and lush. Left camp a bit later today about 8.30am. To do the two walks at Kata Tjuṯa. The first walk, Valley of the Winds stood up to its name. Made walking comfortable with the wind blowing through. Second walk, Walpa Gorge was also good as being a gorge the wind whistled through the gap of the two big domes. Good temperature as being a gorge with its two very high walls we were in shade most of the way. You will probably say, not more red sandstone. I am just making the most of it as I won’t be back and I just love it.

Sun up and on our 50km drive out to Kata Tjuṯa to do the two walks.

Approaching, you can see how they are Dome shape and spread out but some very high.

Walking up the path at the start of the of  The Valley of the Winds walk.

In this area the domes aren’t anything as big as in our second walk which you will see.

Now at the end of the walk only 2.5km return walk. Although it doesn’t show here we are up quite high looking down over the valley below. At this point you could continue down into the valley to do a 7km loop walk but we decided to stop here and go back.

Driving along to our next walking stop.

Now at the start of the Walpa Gorge Walk. As we walk in between the two domes you will notice the extremes of the colours of the domes.

This walk was spectacular again being a Gorge the wind was blowing through, and the extremely high wall,
on the left,  mad a huge shadow made for easier walking.

Walking up towards the end of the gorge.

Getting nearer, just look at how high the side is and it just kept going higher out of the picture. Fabulous.

Getting into some greenery.

Some nice boardwalks to walk on, saves twisting the ankles like walking over the stones as in previous photos. Lots more greenery this must mean there is water around.

Looking back at the other end of the dome

Yes here is a small running water pond. Wonder where that is coming from 🤔

Nearly at the end now.

This is as far as we can go.

End of gorge behind us but I didn’t do well leaving most of the background out of the photo. Note I have one fly on the net under my eye. The flies weren’t bad in the shade but as soon as we got back out in the sun we were swamped .

On our way back the colours seemed to be richer  as the sun was moving around. So high.

Zoomed  in, onto the wall of the dome.

Such rich colours

Looking back to the entrance of  the Gorge were we started from

Walking back

PT sitting on the job.

Car park nearly in sight. Then finish of the walk. Really enjoyed this walk way better than the first one. Spectacular.

Leaving looking back at the Olga’s.

As we left further on one last peep of Uluṟu
